In addition to the capital cases referenced above, he represented James Rodney Leonard who was convicted of murder in 1988 and was part of the helicopter escape at the Perry Correctional Institution made famous by the CBS-TV movie. After defending him on the escape, we filed habeas petition and had his murder conviction reversed, thereupon he was found innocent on the retrial. He was also involved in the 1994 video pornography trials resulting in hung juries without a retrial. In the 1990s, he began to diversify with a primary emphasis on civil cases, including personal injury, worker's compensation and also condemnation cases. In 1996, he received a $2 million award for defamation, which was reported to be the largest defamation verdict in the history of Greenville County. In 1994, he was primary defense counsel in the Clemson University defamation case ont he defense, which resulted in the successful verdict. In 1998, he received two verdicts in excess of $1 million including the slander verdict, but also a personal injury case against the SCDOT involving a death of the driver for the failure to repair bridge railings. Involved in several successful first party actions for bad faith insurance. In 1996 and 1998, he had excess of $5 million in jury verdicts for personal injury or other personal tort practice. Recently he became involved in defense counsel in several actions with corporate defense or others for toxic dumping or allegations of business tort violations, including Air Three Corporation, and representation of other real estate developers.
